During my recent trip to Australia we managed to squeeze in a day trip to the Blue Mountains in New South Wales. There are many cute hotels and B&Bs in Katoomba and Leura (the local towns) but you can definetely do the trip in a day if you don’t have time to stay over.
If you’re coming from central Sydney or the Parramatta area, there’s a direct train that takes you up to the mountains and you can be there in under 2 hours.
If you’re a plant-lover then the Mountains is definitely a trip you want to make. The horizon and views offer a delightful haze of green and blue and it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. Echo Point is the main place to start walks from, it’s usually full of tourists taking pictures but within 5 minutes of your walk there’s barely anyone on the trails and you’ll feel like you’ve got the whole place to yourself.
There’s some fabulous plant life out there so it’s worth picking up one of the helpful little books or leaflets from the store at Echo Point to help you figure out what kind of local leafage you’re looking at. From cockatoos in the trees to weird and wonderful plants on the pathways, there’s an abundance of nature’s creations to admire along the way.
